Line 4

Line 4

Line 4 represents the main north-south axis of public transport in Torino. The 18-km line has been radically overhauled in recent years. It now travels almost completely on a reserved track, with platforms located alongside the track, allowing an increase in commercial speed to18 km/h and making the line competitive with private modes of transport.  Line 4 has two convenient interchange commuter carparks near the city limits -  "Caio Mario” and "Stura".

In 2003 work commenced on the construction of an extension to the line,  from Strada delle Cascinette to Via delle Querce in the Falchera quarter, now the northern end of the line. This stretch is about 2 km long and includes a 700-metre tunnel that runs underneath the Torino-Milano railway and the motorway ramp. There is a tram stop in the tunnel that provides an interchange point with Stura railway station, which is to be  renovated as part of the Torino City Railway Line project, and with the "Stura" parking facility.

With the improvements to Line 4, the fleet was also upgraded, with the acquisition of 55 modern Cityway ™ trams. The new trams feature low floors with no internal steps, have a maximum speed of 70 km/h and can transport 200 passengers. The trams are 34 metres long and are equipped with air conditioning systems. The design of the trams was customised specifically for the City of Turin.
